Join us for a weekend of dance and delight as Alchemy hosts The Fourth Annual Southern Oasis: Puttin’ on the Glitz! Saturday and Sunday will bring you two full days of instruction to give you all you need to know to improve your dance: bellydance, world dance such as Bhangra, Folk, and African dance, and drumming classes with incomparable instructors. Why not bring your friend, your partner, your troupe and make it a weekend to remember? Please see below for more information regarding the workshops we are offering.
Saturday night will feature the gala show to inspire at the one and only City Club in Augusta! We promised to put on the glitz, and The City Club is just the place to do it. Centrally located within minutes walking distance to the workshop locations, dining and hotels, The City Club is the perfect place to spend an evening being entertained by the amazing performers that cross our stage. Not to mention the dazzling array of treasures offered by the carefully selected vendors that will tempt and seduce you, including a professional photographer to preserve this evening to remember. With plenty of space and glamorous surroundings, we know The Oasis will stay in your mind long after it has returned to the sands. Denys has a great love for dance of all kinds and
traditional and ethnic music. Denys, a.k.a.
Karadeniz, now lives in Columbia South Carolina, but
has lived most of his adult life in the "cultural

At Southern Oasis 2008 Denys will run a general

He teaches and performs throughout the Southeast, and wishes to build a community of competent musicians to provide live accompaniment to dancers of all sorts using authentic Middle Eastern and North African rhythms and melodies.
The Basics of Working With Dancers - We will cover the universal ways of communicating with dancers, useful for both choreographed and improvised performance. Natalie Brown grew up studying classical music and ballet as she
travelled the world with her military family. She met her spiritual
match, however, when she stumbled upon a Tribal Bellydance Style
class in New Orleans, LA in 2004. Natalie soon became a n.o.madic
tribal company member under the careful teachings of Ali Arnold, Amy
Hession and Lisa Lala, original students of ATS Master Teacher Meg
Gavin of Devyani.
After fleeing hurricane Katrina, Natalie found herself starting over in
Columbia, SC. With no tribal troupes or classes established in the state
of South Carolina, she founded Tribal Style classes in November of
2005 (with the benevolent help of the CMFA and Center for Dance
Education), and formed Delirium Tribal Bellydance Company in April of
2006. Under her artistic direction, Delirium Tribal is fast becoming a
respected member of the Southeast U.S. bellydance community.
Delirium strives for artistic and technical excellence, while pushing the
boundaries of Tribal Style.

Ashley Bennett made her first steps in belly dance with her beginning troupe, Seladora, in south Georgia. She was first noticed at Arts in the Heart and then at Shimmy-A-Thon, in 2006, and is recognized by her unique approach to dance, and her whimsical style. Classically trained in ballet, under the Royal Academy of Dance, Ashley began training with Natalie Brown (Delirium Tribal) in late 2006 and, later, moved to Columbia, South Carolina. She began working closely with Natalie Brown and the Delirium Tribal company to form, what has become an interdisciplinary partnership known as Columbia Alternacirque. She has also been seen performing at Club FEVER, in Atlanta, for the official myspace.com event, with photos published in Armada Magazine, Sulukule's Winter Athens Hafla, and multiple events around Columbia. Her workshops are increasingly popular because of her intense technical training as well as her easy-going approach to instruction.
This workshop will be focused, primarily, on stage presence and fluid motion - with a concentration on arm and hand movements. Mari and Jeannie are founding members and co-directors of Alchemy Middle Eastern Dance Troupe, with 7 and 5 years of bellydance experience, respectively. Through continuing training with respected instructors within and outside of the bellydance world, the training and developement of a student troupe and a professional troupe, and the constant pursuit of a personal vision, Mari and Jeannie have honed a signature style that is being recognized and appreciated across the Southeast. With an emphasis on education, cultural appreciation, and strong, versitile technique, Alchemy's version of Tribal Fusion encompasses both choreographed and improvisational performances, with a fun flair for the dramatic.
In this workshop, the emphasis will be on floorwork: toning and building the muscles necessary for safe, strong, and controlled floorwork, introducing new movement to your repertoire, and learning how to incorporate floorwork into improvisational performances for the solo or group dynamic. We will also cover the "no-nos", what to consider to keep your floorwork from devolving into a peep show, and how to comport yourself to best display your strength and mastery to the audience. All of this will be presented in the same lighthearted, safe, accepting atmosphere Alchemy is known for in its classes. I began dance at the age of four starting with ballet and tap. As the years progressed I intensified my training in ballet and tap and moved into jazz, African, modern, and lyrical. Just last year I got into belly dance with Jeannie at the YMCA.
Throughout the duration of my dance training I’ve gone to various competitions and camps. In August 2007 I got a teaching job at Kane and Co. Dance Productions, teaching lyrical, ballet, tap, and jazz.
One of my primary focuses in dance is African dance. I started African dance when I was eleven years old at Cutno Dance Studio and my love for it keeps growing. I’ve performed in a variety of shows and conventions and even baby showers. Mainly the dances and rhythms that I’ve learned are from West Africa with a sprinkle of North African flavor. While dancing I also learned how to drum on the djembe, djun-djun, and conga drums. African Dance is fun, intense, and requires no “standard” dance training. The only training one will need is how to let loose and let your hair fly.
African Dance Workshop
Come and take part in this foot-tapping, arm-swinging, hair flying workshop! This African Dance workshop will surely move your feet and make you sweat! Many of the dances are from West Africa and therefore has very fast and energetic beats. This workshop will teach the basics of West African dance but it will definitely give a good and high-energy workout. Following the teaching of the basics, will be choreography. The choreography consists of dance moves that are warrior moves and moves to welcome in peace, fertility, and happiness. Be prepared to let yourself go! Experience the high-energy and fast rhythms that'll make you want to go to the motherland. Requirements for the class are the following:-bare feet (no ifs, ands, or buts)-biker shorts-a form fitting top (leotards, camisoles, tank tops, fitted t-shirts) NO LOOSE FITTING SHIRTS, please!!!!-no jewelry-optional: hair loose (you may wear a scarf over your hips). Please bring either water or Powerade. NO SODAS!!

Barbara Shine (far left) and Tim Sneed (middle) have been folk dancing in Augusta for nine years and have been co-directors of the Augusta International Folk Dance Club for the past two years. As club leaders they have attended many dance workshops in and around the southeast, have hosted several workshops in Augusta and have performed and taught dances for many community events and festivals. Tim is also very active in the ballroom dance community in Augusta and also does contra dancing. Barbara has been belly dancing for the past four years and also does contra dance.
The basics of international folk dancing will be taught along with some energetic and fun dances from Israel, Greece, Bulgaria and Romania and will include a variety of tempo and style. The dances taught will be those very well known by most international groups in the US. Bring clean, soft-soled shoes with support (recommended) for this lively session.
