So, how did you get involved in Alchemy?
I have taken several different types of dance over the years, and when I was a teenager, I often joked around that I was going to bellydance whenever I saw anything bellydance-related. At an Arts In the Heart festival a couple of years ago, I realized I was finally at a place in my life where I could (and should) give it a try. I started in Mari's beginning class not long after, and I just fell in love with it!! When Mari and Jeannie asked me to join Alchemy, I just couldn't turn down the opportunity!
Why do you dance?
When I was about 3, I was a very clumsy kid. Somehow I kept running into coffee tables, walls, and doors. My aunt told my parents that dancing lessons like ballet would help make me more graceful. I have always been very moved by music, both emotionally and physically. After trying different types of dance here and there over the years, I think bellydance fits me best. It gives me the chance to show a part of myself that I can't always show in my daily life. There is also a lot of different styles and ideas to explore, so I will probably never get bored. And where else could you wear such great costuming?
What is the most embarrassing moment you've had on
stage?
Actually, I have had pretty good luck with this so far in belly dance... I have had some embarrassing moments on stage not related to dancing...
What is your favorite tribal move and why?
My favorite is a lay back. Its very sensual and graceful.
What is your favorite Alchemy moment/story?
My favorite times with the Alchemy ladies have been our First Friday performances. There is something almost magical about dancing at night. Something interesting and unexpected always happens.
Besides bellydance, what are your other passions?
I am a music nut. My mental jukebox is always on, and I look up lyrics on line just for kicks. I am always reading. I'm also an art lover.
What stresses you out?
Not having enough before a dance event to really put myself together as far as costuming, hair and makeup. I like to start really early if I can.
What is your favorite dessert?
Ice cream! I don't keep it in my house because it is a dangerous thing. I am especially fond of flavors like coffee and cappuccino.
What is your favorite Alchemy choreography and why?
Wow. That's a tough question. Its hard to choose! But I do tend to like the more "non-traditional" choreographies I have seen, like "Groove is in the Heart" and "Bang Bang". Just because they are fun and unexpected.
Describe your favorite bellydance outfit and why?
Another tough, tough question. I love different pieces for different reasons. My favorite harem pants are red, and I love the flash of color they give under a black skirt. I love my vest because of the black-on-black design woven into the fabric. I love my tassel belt because its bright and colorful. I love my coin bra because its flashy. I honestly just like putting the outfits together and being able to be creative and make it my own.
